IELTS Cue Card 41 : Describe an important piece of news that you received via text message

Short Version

Text messaging is one of the most important features of Mobile phone services these days.

Last month, I was having my phone in my hand. It started ringing and I checked the notification. It was a text message from Punjab government. I think, other citizens also received this message. This message brought very good news: a big relief to everyone. It was a notification message from the government to announce that public water supply had been made free to every household with effect from that date. The government would bear the cost of water supply and no bills would be levied on households.

Actually, there was a demand from public to waive charges on water supply. While the economy of the country was going through difficult phase; common people were finding it very difficult to maintain their expenditures. They were frequently asking the government to help them. My father also met the area in-charge on behalf of the village people and gave a request letter to waive water charges.

Finally after a struggle of 6 months, the government agreed and it brought relief to all of us. This text message was not ordinary one, it was special and I immediately shared my joy with my father and other family members. This text message served as a piece of communication between government and common people.

The text messaging service left a positive impression on my mind. Now I carefully check such kind of messages in which the sender is government departments.

So this was the text message which brought good news for us.

Long Version

Text messaging is one of the most important features of Mobile phone services these days. Infact, we receive updates of public services, promotions and news through text messages. For example, when we apply for passport, we receive appointment date and timings by text messages. Then we are sent verification, issuance and dispatch details of passport through messages on phone. No doubt, text messaging has brought a great convenience to the general public. Text messages have also enabled the government departments to bring better delivery of services to the public.
