(21) HOLI

Holi is the most famous festival of colours. It is celebrated every year in the month of Falgun (March) by the people of Hindu religion. It is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm as it brings feeling of love and closeness among people. Colourful colours are spread out by the people over each other. At this day we meet each other, handshake, hug and apply abeer on the forehead to each other. We sing religious songs (or Fagua geet) with musical instruments like Dholak, Kirtal, etc. At this special day we eat special things like gujhiya, sweets, chips, papad, halwa, pani puri, dahi bade, etc. A day before the colourful holi, Holika Dahan takes place.

Holi is a most favourite festival of all as it brings lots of joy and happiness. It is celebrated every year by the people of Hindu religion as a very important festival. It falls in the start of spring season generally in the month of March (or Falgun). Everyone wait for this festival with lots of courage and special preparations of how to celebrate it.

There is a great story of Prahlad behind celebrating the holi. Once Prahlad (who was a great devotee of God) was tried to be killed by his own father as he denied to worship his own father in place of God. His aunt, Holika, sit in the fire by keeping him in her lap on the order of Prahlad’s father but he was saved by the God as he was a true devote. And Holika burnt in the fire even after she was booned by the God to never get harmed by the fire. From that day, Hindu people start celebrating the festival of holi every year to remember the triumph of goodness over badness.

A day before colourful holi, people burn a heap of woods and co-dung cakes in the night in the myth of burning Holika to remember that day. Some people follow the special ritual of burning the waste of sarson ubtan massage of each family member in the Holika in the myth that doing so would remove all the evil power from the house and the body and bring happiness and positive power to the home.

In the next morning, people play with colours with their family members, relatives, friends and neighbours. Kids of the house enjoy this day by throwing colour filled balloons to each other or using pitchakri. Everyone go to the doors of other to meet, hug and apply abeer to the forehead showing their love and affection to each other. Special preparations are done for this day like arrangements of sweets, chips, namkeen, dahi bade, pani puri, papadi, etc.

(22) DUSSEHRA

The festival of Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashmi and celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm by the Hindu people all over the India. It is one of the most important religious festivals of the India. According to the historical beliefs and most famous Hindu scripture, the Ramayana, it has been mentioned that Lord Rama had performed a chandi-puja (holy prayer in order to get blessings of the Goddess Durga Mata to kill the powerful demon, Ravana. Ravana was ten-headed demon king of the Sri Lanka who had kidnapped the wife of Lord Rama, Seeta to take revenge of his sister, Suparnakha. From then, the day Lord Rama killed Ravana was started celebrating as the Dussehra festival.

Dussehra is the most significant festival of the Hindu religion celebrated all across the country. It falls every year in the month of September or October twenty days earlier to the Diwali festival. The celebration of Dussehra indicates the victory of Lord Rama over demon king Ravana. Lord Rama symbolizes truth and Ravana represents evil power. It is a great ceremonial and religious festival celebrated by the Hindu people with the worship of goddess Durga. The tradition and culture of celebrating this festival varies from region to region in the country.

It is a ten days long festival, nine days of which is celebrated by worshipping the goddess Durga and tenth day as Vijay Dashmi when people celebrate the victory of Lord Rama over the demon King, Ravana. Paper models of the Ravana, Kumbhkaran and Meghnath are prepared in the Ram Lila ground and real people play the role of Rama, Seta and Lakshman.

Everywhere lights are on and whole environment becomes full of sound of firecrackers. People and kids used to see the fair including ram-lila whole night. Various important events of the life of Lord Rama are demonstrated by the real people in the Ram Lila. Thousands of men, women and children of the nearby regions get together in the Ram Lila ground to enjoy the show.

(23) GANESH CHATURTHI

Ganesh Chaturthi is a highly preferred and most popular festival of the Hindu religion. It is celebrated annually in the month of August or September with big enthusiasm. It is celebrated as a birth anniversary of the Lord Ganesha. Ganesha is a son of Mata Parvati and God Shiva. Lord Ganesha is a most favourite God of everyone especially children. He is the God of wisdom and prosperity so people in Hindu religion worship him to get the same. People bring a clay statue of the Ganesha and keep in home on Chaturthi and do worship for 10 days and perform Ganesh Visarjan on 11 day means on Anant Chaturdashi.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a most popular festival in India. It is celebrated every year with great enthusiasm by the people of Hindu religion. Children love too much to the Lord Ganesha and worship him to get blessings of wisdom and prosperity. People start preparation of the puja a month or week before the exact date of the festival. During this festive season, market become in a full swing. Everywhere shops are decorated with the attractive idols of Ganesha and electric lightings in order to increase sales of the idol to public.

Devotees bring Lord Ganesha to their home and perform idol installation with full devotion. It is believed in the Hindu religion that when Ganesha come to home brings lots of wisdom, prosperity and happiness to the home however when go back after 10 days take away all the problems and obstacles with him. Lord Ganesha loves children too much and called as friend Ganesha by them. Group of people prepare pandal to worship Ganesha. They decorate pandal with flowers and lightings to make attractive. Many people from the nearby areas come daily to the pandal to offer prayer and offerings to the God. They offer many things and especially Modak as He loves it too much.

It is celebrated in the month of August or September for 10 days. Ganesh Chaturthi puja involves two important processes; one is idol installation and second is idol immersion (also called as Ganesh Visarjan). There is a ritual in Hindu religion to perform Pranapratishhtha Pooja (to call the God for His holy presence into the idol) and Shhodashopachara (perform worship using sixteen ways to honour the God). There is a ritual of offering of Durva grass and Modak, jaggery, coconut, red flowers, red chandan and camphor while worshiping for ten days. A huge crowd of people involve happily in the Ganesha Visarjan on the end of puja.

Diwali is the most significant and famous festival of the India which is being celebrated every year all over the country as well as outside the country. People celebrate it very enthusiastically to commemorate the returning of Lord Rama to his kingdom, Ayodhya after a long period of time of 14 years of exile after defeating the Ravana.

On the returning day of Lord Rama, people of Ayodhya had illuminated their homes and pathways to welcome their Lord with the great enthusiasm. It is a sacred Hindu festival which symbolizes the triumph of goodness over badness. It is also celebrated by the Sikhs to commemorate the release of their 6th Guru, Sri Hargobind Ji, from the Gwalior jail by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir.

Christmas is a big festival celebrated by the people in the winter season. Everyone enjoy a cultural holiday at this day. All the governmental (such as schools, colleges, universities, educational institutions, training centres, offices, etc) and non-governmental organizations become closed at this day. People celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm and lots of preparations and decorations. It is celebrated every year on 25th of December. It is known as the Feast day of Christ and celebrated in the honour of birth of birth of Jesus Christ. It is the day of great significance for the Christians.

Christmas is a big festival of joy and happiness. It is celebrated on the birth anniversary of the Jesus Christ (founder of the Christianity) faith every year on 25th of December in the winter season. They load the Christmas tree with lots of gift items like chocolates, candies, balloons, dolls, birds, flowers, lights, etc to make it bright and beautiful.

Christian people do pray to their God Jesus Christ, confess in front of God to remove their sins and sufferings, sing holy songs, and exchange lots of gifts among friends, relative, family members, neighbours, etc. They arrange a big feast including delicious dishes in the dinner which are served to all people. After feast everyone enjoy music, dance and sing at night. It is a festival of great fervour and rejoice which everyone enjoy all over the world.

(26) MOTHERS DAY

Mother’s Day is a happiest and highly memorable day of the year for every kids, children and students. Mother’s day is a special day of the year which has been dedicated for all mothers of the India. Mother’s Day is celebrated every year on second Sunday in the month of the May. This year in 2015, it would be celebrated on 10th of May (second Sunday) with lots of joy and happiness. Kids become very happy at this day and celebrate in front of their mothers at home or in school in order to honour their mothers.

Mother’s day is a very special day of the year for both kids and mother. It is being celebrated since many years every year on the second Sunday of the month of May in India. It is celebrated by the teachers and students in the schools by inviting mothers. Students take part in many cultural activities to impress their mothers. Mothers are especially invited to school by their kids on the order of school Principal and teachers. At this day mothers are given lots of gifts, love and respects by their kids. Actually we cannot count our mother’s daily activities. She does unlimited works for whole day long. She is only responsible for all works of all members of the family. (27) REPUBLIC DAY

Our country, India celebrates the Republic Day every year to honour the date when Constitution of India came into force. The Constitution of India replaced the Government of India Act 1935 as a governing document of India on the special date called 26 January in 1950. It has been declared as the national holiday by the Government of India. People in India enjoy this great day by celebrating in their own way. At this day a parade takes place in the national capital of India, New Delhi at the Rajpath (in front of the India Gate) in the presence of President of India.

26 January is knows as Republic Day which is celebrated by the people of India every year with great joy ad enthusiasm. It is celebrated to honour the importance of being a Sovereign Democratic Republic which was declared after the enforcement of Constitution of India in 1950 on 26th of January. It is celebrated to enjoy and remember the historic Independence of India from the British Rule. 26th of January has been declared as the gazetted holiday all through the country by the Government of India. It is celebrated by the students all over the India by getting participated in the events organised in schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions.

Government of India organises an event every year in the National capital, New Delhi where a special parade is held in front of the India Gate. People started to assemble at the Raj Path in the early morning to see the great event. A parade of all three wings of Indian armed forces starts form the Vijay Chowk displaying various arms, weapons, tanks, big guns and etc. Military bands, N.C.C cadets and police also take part in the parade playing different tunes. Some Mini celebrations by the state capitals are also take place in various states in the presence of state governor.

Various states of the country also display particular Jhanki related to their culture, tradition and progress after independence showing the existence of ‘Unity in Diversity in India’. Folk dances are exhibited by people as well as some dancing, singing and instruments plying activities takes place. At the end of event, a tri color (saffron, white and green) flower showering with aeroplanes takes place in the sky showing the symbol of National Flag. Children’s Day is celebrated in India every year with great enthusiasm on 14th of November. It is celebrated by the teachers and students in the schools and colleges with great passion and excitement. It is celebrated with lots of events and activities performed by the kids. School buildings get decorated with multicolor paints, colorful balloons and other decorative materials. Children’s day is celebrated on 14th of November, the birth anniversary of Pt. Nehru, because he loved children so much. Children participate in the activities like singing songs in Hindi and English, poem recitation, speech, dance, etc to remember Chacha Nehru’s great works for the country.

As we all know that our teachers play a great and most important role in our lives. (30) INDEPENDENCE DAY

India got independence on 15th of august in 1947, so people of India celebrate this special day every year as the Independence Day on 15th of august. In the event celebration organized in the National Capital, New Delhi the Prime Minister of India unfurled the National Flag in the early morning at the Red fort where millions of people participate in the Independence Day ceremony.

During the celebration at Red Fort, New Delhi many tasks including March past are performed by the Indian army and cultural events by the school students are performed. After the national Flag hosting and national Anthem (JANA GANA MANA) recitation, the prime minister of India gives his annual speech.

At this day, we commemorate all the great personalities who had played their important role in the independence of India. During the Independence Day celebration, the National Flags are also hosted in school and colleges where many activities are performed by the teachers and students.

Independence Day is celebrated by the people of India every year on 15th of August as a National Holiday to commemorate the independence of India from the Kingdom of Great Britain on 15th of August in 1947. At this day, people of India pay heartily homage to the great leaders in the leadership of whom India became free forever. At this day, people celebrate in their own way by buying tricolour Flag, watching movies based on freedom fighters, listening patriotic songs, bonding with family and friends, participating in special contests, programs, and articles organized by the broadcast, print and online media to promote the awareness about day.

Jawaharlal Nehru became our first Prime Minister after the independence of India on 17th of August 1947 who raised the Flag at Lahore Gate of Red Fort in Delhi and given a speech. This phenomenon is followed by the other subsequent Prime Ministers of India where flag hoisting ceremonies, parades, march past, salute by 21 guns and other cultural events are organized. Other people celebrate this day by raising national flag on their clothes, homes or vehicles. On the midnight of 15th August in 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had announced the independence of India by reading out his speech on “Tryst with destiny”. He said that after long years of slavery, it is the time when we will redeem our pledge with the end of our ill fortune.
