(61) POLLUTION
Pollution is the contamination of the natural environment which exists around us and helps in normal living. Any type of pollution in our natural surroundings and ecosystem causes insecurity, health disorders and discomfort in normal living. It disorganises the natural systems and thus disturbs the nature’s balance.
The pollutants or elements of pollution are foreign substances or waste materials created by the human beings and pollute the natural resources like air, water or soil etc. The chemical nature, concentration and long persistence of the pollutants continually disturbs the ecosystem for years. The pollutants can be poisonous gases, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, noise, organic compounds and radioactive materials.
Pollution has become the most serious issue as everyone is facing lots of health hazards in their daily life. Various types of pollutants from the industrial garbage and other activities are contaminating our natural resources like air, water, soil, etc. After being mixing into the soil, air and water, they are directly affecting the human being and animal body system and causing variety of lethal ailments to health. Noise pollution is affecting the listening system in the body as well as causing disturbance to the memory.
The rate of pollution in the cities is higher than the villages because of the vehicles transportation. Fumes arise from the running vehicles, factories and other industries are affecting the clean air of cities which is not fit for the breathing. Soiled water from the big sewage system, other garbage from the households, by-products from the factories and industries are directly mixing to the rivers, lake and oceans. Most of the solid wastes, garbage and other unused things are thrown away by the people on the land which cause soil pollution and affect the crop production. Most of the people in the cities spread noise pollution to a great extent during their birthday, marriage or other occasions just for their short time happiness. All the roads in the cities become full of traffic all through the day because of the increasing number of vehicles which are the reason of both air pollution and noise pollution.
Ultimately all the man made technological advancement is the big reason of all types of pollution on the earth. So, no one other than human, who is digging a pit of pollution worldwide and creating a serious problem for the living things on the earth. The quality of life is worsening day by day as pollution acts as a devil which causes various health ailments like high blood pressure, kidney disorders, respiratory disease, cancer, epidemics, skin diseases, etc.
(62) WATER POLLUTION
Water pollution has become a continuous increasing problem on the earth which is affecting the human and animal lives in all aspects. Water pollution is the contamination of drinking water by the poisonous pollutants generated by the human activities. The whole water is getting polluted through many sources such as urban runoff, agricultural, industrial, sedimentary, leeching from landfills, animal wastes, and other human activities. All the pollutants are very harmful to the environment. Human population is increasing day by day and thus their needs and competition leading pollution to the top level. We need to follow some drastic changes in our habits to save the earth water as well as continue the possibility of life here.
Water is the most important need of the life on the earth. It makes possible the possibility of any forms of life here and their existence. It maintains the ecological balance in the biosphere. Clean water is very necessary for fulfilling the purpose of drinking, bathing, washing, power generation, irrigation of crops, disposal of sewage, manufacturing processes and many more. Increasing human population causes rapid industrialisation and unplanned urbanisation which are releasing lots wastes into the small and large water bodies which ultimately degrades the quality of water. The mixing of such pollutants directly and continuously into the water bodies decreases the self purifying capacity of the water by declining the ozone (which kills harmful microorganisms) available in the water.
Contamination of water deteriorates the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of the water which is very harmful to the human beings, animals and plants all over the world. Most of the important animals and plants species have been lost because of the water contamination. It is a global issue affecting the lives in both developed and developing countries. Whole water is getting polluted to a great level because mining, agriculture, fisheries, stockbreeding, various industries, urban human activities, urbanisation, increasing number of manufacturing industries, domestic sewage, etc.
There are many sources of the water pollution (point source and nonpoint or diffused source) depending on the specificity of waste materials discharged from various sources. Point sources includes pipelines, ditches, sewers, etc from industries, sewage treatment plants, landfills, hazardous waste sites, leakage from oil storage tanks which discharges wastes directly into the water bodies. Diffused sources of the water pollution are agricultural fields, live-stock feed lots, parking lot and streets into surface water, storm runoff from urban streets, etc which pours their discharged pollutants over the larger areas water bodies. Non-point source pollution contributes highly to the water pollution which is very difficult and expensive to control.
(63) SOIL POLLUTION
Soil is the natural resource on the earth which directly supports the life plants and indirectly of animals from the origin of life on the earth. It is very important complex substance available everywhere on the earth. Productive soil is a soil useful to grow crops. As a human being, we need to keep our land safe and secure and away from all the impurities. However, it is not possible because of the technological advancement.
Soil is getting polluted through the toxic substances released by the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, industrial wastes, etc which are badly affecting the fertility of land. Soil pollution depletes the soil nutrients because of the availability of heavy concentration of undesirable foreign elements into soil through chemicalization.
Soil pollution is the contamination of the fertile soil which reduces the productivity of soil because of various toxic pollutants. Toxic pollutants are very dangerous and adversely affect the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil. Variety of pollutants such as pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, chemicals, radioactive wastes, organic manure, discarded food, clothes, plastics, paper, leather goods, bottles, tins-cans, carcasses, etc gets mixed to the soil and cause soil pollution. Other released chemicals by various means like iron, mercury, lead, copper, cadmium, aluminium, zinc, industrial wastes, cyanides, acids, alkalies etc are the toxic chemicals causes soil pollution. Acid rain is a natural cause also affects soil fertility directly.
Earlier, the soil were very much fertile without the use of any fertilizers but now-a-days all the farmers have started using very strong fertilizers in order to increase crop production because of high demand of food by the increasing population. Improper, unnecessary and continuous use of variety of strong organic or inorganic insecticides (DDT, benzene hexa chloride, aldrin, etc), herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, etc in order to secure crops from insects, pests, fungus, etc are gradually toxifying the soil. All types of such chemicals have very dangerous effects directly on the plants growth (inhibits growth, reduces production and reduces size of fruit) and indirectly on the human health. Such chemicals slowly get absorbed by the soil and then plants which ultimately reaches to the animals and human beings body through the food chains.
Other radioactive wastes from the sources like mining and nuclear processes reach to the soil through water and affects the soil and ultimately to the plants, animals (through grazing) and human (through food, milk, meat etc). Eating such type of food causes growth retardation and abnormal growth of the animals and human. Increasing industrialization in the modern world creates huge heap of wastes on daily basis which directly or indirectly gets mixed to the soil and contaminate it.
(64) SAVE TREES
Trees give us life directly and indirectly as they are source of oxygen production, CO2 consumption and source of rain. They are most precious gift to the humanity on the earth from nature for which we must be grateful, give honour and preserve for the mankind wellness.
We should understood importance of trees in our lives and do our best to save trees in order to save life, save environment on the earth and make earth a green earth. Trees are as valuable as gold that’s why they are called as “Green Gold” on the earth. They are the real source of our health as well as wealth because they give us oxygen, cool air, fruits, spices, vegetables, medicines, water, wood, furniture, shadow, fuel to burn, houses, fodder to animals and other useful things. They consume all the CO2, refresh air from toxic gases and prevent us from the air pollution.
Introduction
We are really bestowed by our mother earth many precious gifts nourishing our lives. One of the important precious gifts is trees. It is the source of food and shelter too for human beings and animals on the earth. Trees are natural home to many tribes living inside forests and home to all the birds. They give us timber to make furniture, refresh air, prevent soil erosion and floods, give cool and clean air in summer, source of products like gum, paper, rubber, medicine, rain, etc. We should understand the roles and importance of trees in our life and take a pledge to not destroy them as well as encourage people to plant more trees.
How to Save a Tree
Here are some effective ways to save tree and save life and environment on the earth:
We should find out the reasons of trees removal in the particular region and analyse that whether tree was need to be removed because of being dead, damaged, diseased or planted in an inappropriate location.
We should get proper information about the street tree removal by contacting city department, calling to local division of urban forestry, or writing a letter to the city forester regarding trees removal objection.
We can contact our city council representatives regarding tree removal issue. We should join our hands together with neighbors and set a public hearing in front of officials regarding saving of the tree.
We should research and collect all the benefits of trees in order to make case strong and effective.
We should contact with the media and make them on our side to reach tree removal issue to the public and generate awareness.
If trees have been removed, we should contact local governmental or nonprofit organization for ensuring re-plantation in the same area.
Conclusion
Life is possible on the earth because of water, oxygen and trees and we cannot ignore that trees are source of oxygen and water on the earth. If we are destroying trees or forests, we are destroying our lives and environment from the green earth. Human beings are considered as the most intelligent creature on the earth, so we should understand our responsibility towards the nature and start saving trees, the green gold of earth.
(65) DEFORESTATION
Deforestation is the removal of forests on a big level by cutting down plants or burning of forests for fulfilling the personal needs. Forests are of great importance for the whole human fraternity as well as managing the natural balance in the environment. However, human beings are regularly cutting down the trees without seeing its side effects on the society and environment. Woods have been of great importance historically from the ancient time and used for many purposes like heating fuel, building houses, ships, paper production and many more daily activities of the human beings. Forests are very necessary for us and our future generations to enjoy and live a healthy and peaceful life in the healthy environment free of pollution.
Deforestation is the finishing of the forests by the human beings. Increasing human population day by day is increasing the need for land on the earth for agricultural, industrial, residential, commercial, cities and other purposes which involves permanent forest removal. In the last century, our earth was covered with the forests everywhere however now-a-days only some counted forests exist. Deforestation is a big problem in India as well as other countries. It is a global issue arising as the big environmental and social issue around the globe.
Deforestation disturbs the human lives by causing several imbalances ecologically and environmentally. Deforestation is alarming continuously and indicating the need to stop cutting plants for the safety of human lives. Some people are doing deforestation to fulfil their greediness of earning money from wood. People are cutting plants for their agricultural activities, logging (to make papers, match-sticks, furniture, etc), urbanization (road construction, housing, etc), desertification of land, mining (oil and coal mining), fires (to get heat), etc.
Deforestation is affecting the health of human being and fresh environment through climate imbalance, increasing global warming, soil erosion, floods, wildlife extinction, decreasing level fresh oxygen and increasing carbon dioxide gas and many more. Deforestation is very necessary stop in order to run the life as usual in better way. There should be some strict rules and regulations by the government of the country which everyone must follow to check deforestation. There should be simple and easy ways to make common people aware about the causes and effects of deforestation. Population should be controlled to lessen the need of forests cutting. Whenever any plant is cut, there should be rules for replanting the plants in the place of old one.
(66) AIR POLLUTION
Air pollution is a most serious problem of the current time all over the world especially in the large cities because of the huge level of industrialization. The release of such air pollutants in heavy concentrations such as smog, particulates, solid materials, etc are getting settled over the city, causing air pollution and health hazards to the people. Lots of dirty wastes produced by people on daily basis especially in the big cities polluting the whole atmospheric air to a great extent.
The release of gaseous pollutants from burning fuel of motor vehicles, industrial processes, burning of garbage, etc are contributing to the air pollution. Some natural pollutants like pollen, dust, soil particles, natural gases, etc are also the source of air pollution.
When the fresh air gets polluted by means of dust, toxic gases, smoke, motor vehicles, mills and factories, etc called air pollution. As we all know that fresh air is the most important element of the healthy life, we need to think that what happens if whole atmospheric air gets dirty. First of all air pollution is the matter of great regret for the whole human fraternity. Some of the big reasons of the air pollution are use of poisonous fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides in the agricultural sectors by the innocent farmers in order to increase the crop production. Released chemicals and hazardous gases (ammonia) from such fertilizers are getting mixed into the fresh air and causing air pollution.
Burning of fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum including other factory combustibles are the major causes of air pollution. Variety of smoke emissions from the automobiles such as cars, buses, motorcycles, trucks, jeeps, trains, aeroplanes, etc are also causing air pollution. Increasing number of industries is causing release of toxic industrial smokes and harmful gases (like carbon monoxide, organic compounds, hydrocarbons, chemicals, etc) from the factories and mills to the environment. Some indoor activities of the people like innocent use of cleaning products, washing powders, paints etc emits various toxic chemicals to the air.
The ever increasing level of air pollution also enhances its negative and harmful effects to the health of living beings. Air pollution is causing global warming to increase because of increasing atmospheric temperature due to the increasing level of green house gases. Such green house gases again causing green house effect and forcing sea levels to increase, glaciers to melt, weather to change, climate to change, etc. Increasing air pollution is causing many lethal diseases (cancer, heart attack, asthma, bronchitis, kidney diseases, etc) and death to occur. Various important animals and plants species have been destroyed completely from this planet. Increasing level of harmful gases in the environment are causing the occurrence of acid rain and depleting the ozone layer.
(67) NOISE POLLUTION
Noise pollution is considered as the environmental pollution caused in the environment by the excess level of noise through many sources. Noise pollution is also known as the noise disturbance. Excessive noise is harmful to the health and cause imbalance to the human or animal life. It has been a massive environmental issue in India which needs a proper attention to be solved however it is less dangerous than the water, air and soil pollution. Outdoor noise is hugely caused by the sources like machines, transportation systems, poor urban planning (construction of side-by-side industrial and residential buildings), etc. Indoor noise sources are household machines, building activities, loud music, etc. The most common impairment caused by the noise pollution is the permanent hearing loss due to ear drum damage.
There are various types of pollution in the environment, soil pollution is one of them and have become more dangerous to the health. It has become so dangerous that it can be compared to the other most dangerous problems like cancer, etc in which slow death is sure. Noise pollution is the dangerous gift of modern living style and increasing level of industrialization and urbanization. If regular and effective actions are not taken to control, it can be very serious to the future generations. Noise pollution is the pollution caused by the noise due to the increased level of unwanted sound in the environment. It is a big potential hazard to the health and causes huge level of communication problems.
High level of noise brings irritation in the behavior of many people especially diseased, old people and pregnant women. Unwanted sound causes deafness problem and other chronic disorders to the ear like damage to the ear drum, ear pain, etc. Sometimes high sound music pleases the listeners however irritates other people. Any undesired sound in the environment is injurious to the health. Some of the sources participating highly in the noise pollution are industries, factories, transportation, traffic, aeroplane engines, train sounds, home appliances, construction, etc.
The noise level of 60 db is considered as the normal noise however, noise level of 80 db or above become physically painful and harmful to the health. Cities having high noise quantum are Delhi (80 db), Kolkata (87 db), Bombay (85 db), Chennai (89 db), etc. Limiting the amount of noise to a safe level has become very necessary for the life on the earth as undesired noise affects the health of human beings, plants and animals too. It is possible through the general awareness among public about the noise pollution, its main sources, it’s dangerous effects, as well as all the possible preventive measures to get prevented from the noise pollution.
